Last night for our weekly girl’s dinner, we tried the newly opened Tar & Roses located in Santa Monica (6th and Santa Monica Blvd.). The restaurant serves modern rustic cuisine (similar to Cook’s County, but better). The menu is divided into four sections: snacks, veggies, small plates and large plates. Since we had a vegetarian at the table (we forgive you Ari), we ordered heavy on the vegetables and light on the meat (the lamb belly with minted apple chutney). And we loved EVERYTHING. There was not one thing that we ate that was not fresh, perfectly seasoned and mouth watering. We had ordered one ricota gnocchi, but when two came out, we were more than happy to eat both since they were that good. The menu isn’t posted online yet, since it will be changing daily, but the dishes we ordered are almost certain to be regulars.
To start we got four cheese and a bruschetta. For the cheeses, our waiter helped us pick a good variety (1 goat, 2 cow and 1 mixed) and we were in heaven. We also ordered a salted cod bruschetta which was to die for.
For small plates, we ordered the ricotta gnocchi, the small gems salad (grilled romaine topped with burrata cheese) and the mussels, which was served with warm garlic bread. These were my favorite dishes of the night.
We had the lamb belly with minted apple chutney from the snack section and for our meat-eaters, this was a great addition to our feast (I unfortunately didn’t snap a picture). And finally, we ordered four dished from the vegetable section: the broccoli topped with melted Parmesan, the squash with quinoa, kale and pistachios, the beets and the chanterelle stuffing. All of which were delicious, but the beets knocked it out of the park.
For dessert, we tried the strawberry ricotta pancake with honeycomb ice cream. It was good, but not as superb as the food we had for dinner. I’m looking forward to seeing their dessert menu expand in the future.

Overall, the service was impeccable, especially for a brand new restaurant. The wine list was varied and the wait staff was extremely knowledgeable about the food, the amount of food and the variety that we should order as a table. The only small complaint would be the limited dessert menu which only has two items (rice pudding and the strawberry ricotta pancake), but I think they will be expanding this soon.
