An Unpacking Weekend

Five weeks after my stuff was packed up in Los Angeles, it arrived in Fairbanks.

It wasn’t so much that I was excited about my clothes finally arriving, but instead I was excited for a nice mattress and bed frame. See, 2 years ago when Q moved up here, he didn’t have a mattress. He headed down to the Mattress Ranch (the only mattress store in town) and said “What’s your cheapest mattress?” The salesperson led him over to it and he sat on it and he asked, “What’s your second cheapest mattress?” and the salesperson led him to that mattress and he said “I’ll take it!” And for the last 2 years (minus the year he was gone), he has slept on the second cheapest mattress from Mattress Ranch. Not only that, but he didn’t have a bed frame, so it’s been on the floor. His thinking was that when I came up, I would bring the nice tempurpedic up with me. Well the past 3.5 weeks, I’ve been sleeping on the second cheapest mattress from Mattress Ranch on the floor. My back hurts. My hips hurt. There are certain springs that don’t release. It’s been an adventure to say the least. So when THE mattress arrived on Friday, it was the best day EVER. Q spent the first hour putting together our bed frame from Ikea (we bought all of our furniture at Ikea and had it moved up with my stuff) and then we immediately put sheets on it, sat on it and said “Wow, so this is what we have been missing.” The problem now is that I’m never going to want to get OUT of bed!

So this weekend has been about unpacking the 73 boxes that arrived. Our apartment was pretty full before the boxes arrived, so it’s been a lot of me saying “It’s all going to be OK” and Q saying “I just don’t know where it is all going to go!” But we are making it work. Yesterday Q made the new drawers that came and I unpacked all the knick knacks. The challenge this week will be putting my 3 boxes of shoes into 1 closet and unpacking the rest of my wardrobe while my closet is already packed full…

This was our treat to ourselves after a full day of unpacking… pizza and wine.
